In The Dark

Sparky Parker

Self-Released 2019

Review by David Bowling

Sparky Parker is another electric blue/rock guitarist from the state of Texas. He and his band; bassist Philip Lock and drummer Kevin Berry, have just issued a new album titled In The Dark.

I am always partial to blues trios, and yes there is some supporting keyboards by William Gorman, but with basic backing, Parker is forced to carry the load and there is no place for his guitar to hide in the mix.

The new album is comprised of seven originals and three covers. Very few musicians have tackled the Rolling Stones “Dead Flowers,” but here is takes on a deep bluesy feel. Bobby Bland’s “I Wouldn’t Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)” is a nice fusion of soul and blues.

The original “Games” is a stripped down blues ballad, while Parker channels Dick Dale and his surf guitar on “Escape To Quintana.”

Sparky Parker and band have created a solid and interesting album of blues rock. In The Dark will hopefully be Parker’s breakout release.
