True & Blue Live

Huns Theessink & Terry Evans

City Hall Records 2015

Review by David Bowling

Huns Theessink and Terry Evans are an odd couple as one is from Europe and the other from the American south. What they have in common is an ability to play the blues. Together they have close to 100 years of blues playing experience behind them. They have just released their latest album titled True & Blue Live.

Sometimes simple is best and that saying reigns supreme on their new release. It is just their voices, guitars, and Theessink’s harmonica recorded live in Vienna, Austria. The music is stark, intimate, and above all pure examples of modern day blues.

Musically, they match-up well. Theessink’s voice is smooth and his guitar picking precise. Evans have a voice that is rooted in gospel traditions and his guitar playing produces a bigger sound.

The Old soul classic “Don’t Let The Green Grass Fool You” and Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline” are 13 minutes of blues bliss.

Originals such as “I Need Money,” “Tears Are Falling,” and “Vicksburg Is My Home” show their synchronicity. Robert Johnson’s classic “Cross Road Blues” undergoes some twists and turns in their capable hands.

True & Blue Live is an album of down to earth blues waiting to be explored. A fun album for anyone interested in the blues.
