Big O Records 2015
Review by David Bowling
Many blues artists produce their best work when there has been some pain or turmoil in their lives. Greg Nagy experienced the end of a 25 year relationship while recording his new album. Stranded visits the dark places of life as Nagy searches for redemption.
Nagy’s blues incorporate some soulful vocals into his sound, which harp back to his days with the band Root Doctor. During his time with the band, his voice developed a soulful quality, which has carried over into his solo career as a bluesman.
He is a concise musician as his writing has a structure, plus his guitar playing is precise and under control. The energetic “Long Way To Memphis” and “”Still Doing Fine,” the powerful ballad “I Won’t Give Up,” and his gritty cover of the old soul classic “Ain’t No Love In The heart Of The City” all combine to help create consistent and cohesive album.
Greg Nagy’s third album is an excellent album of blues from a little different perspective and is worth a listen or two.
