Blues Scars

Skyla Burrell Band

Greenbroke/Vizz Tone 2014

Review by David Bowling

Skyla Burrell is one of those people that was born to sing and play the blues. She joined her fist band at the age of 13 and has never looked back.

Singer/vocalist Burrell and co-band founder/guitarist Mark Tomlinson formed the band in 2005. They have now released their fifth full-length album titled Blues Scars. They are joined by bassist Michelle Lucas and drummer Ezell Jones Jr.

They developed their chops from years on the road, playing their energetic brand of electric blues in clubs and small halls. Burrell has a voice that reaches out and grabs your attention. She and Tomlinson make a good pair of guitarists as he provides the foundation that supports her lead.

One thing they have going for them is they only play their own material. Tomlinson and Burrell share the songwriting duties and are able to craft excellent blues songs. Songs such as “Shut You Down,” “Full Time Gambler,” “Love Letter In Blue,” “6 Mile Cemetery Road,” and “Bad Business” are all good examples of modern day electric blues that pay homage to the artists that have preceded them.

Blues Scars is an album of authentic blues by a band that continually earns its keep.
