Peter Furler Christmas
Peter Furler with David Ian
Prescott Records 2014
Review by David Bowling
Thanksgiving is still about seven weeks in the future but the scent of Christmas is in the air as the first new holiday album of the year has just arrived in my mailbox.
The honor of officially kicking off the CD holiday season belongs to Australian Peter Furler. He helped form the commercially successful Christian rock band the Newsboys in 1985. Originally the drummer, he took over the lead vocals duties in 1997. He left the band in 2009 and is about to release his third solo album titled Peter Furler Christmas featuring David Ian.
It is a fairly traditional Christmas album centered around instantly recognizable songsl. It is also more mellow than much of his previous material, which may have been partly due to his choice of keyboardist David Ian as his running mate. Last year Ian released an excellent album of light jazz Christmas songs and some of that style has made its way onto this album.
There are a number of traditional treatments including a full orchestration of “O Come All Ye Faithful” Furler provides a unique and laid-back vocal to the carol “We Three Kings,” which takes the song in a contemplative direction.
He and Ian take “O Come O Come Emmanuel” apart and then piece it back together in musical sections. Add in such songs as “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,” “What Child Is This,” Little Drummer Boy,” and “Silent Night” and you have a mellow album suitable for a quiet evening around the Christmas tree.
