Chet’s Last Stand

Bim Skala Bim

Review by David Bowling

Bim Skala Bim is a fun and talented bar type band who is now over 30 years into their career. Formed in Boston during 1983, they were at heart a modern reggae and ska band that hooked on to the British 2-tone sound of the era.

They have now returned with their first studio album of new material in over a decade. They are a sprawling eight man group with keyboards, guitar, percussion, bass, drums, trombone, and saxophone. In some ways their live material presents a better picture of who they are as a band, which is a hard working group who has a lot of fun on stage. Still, Chet’s Last Call is an enjoyable romp through their unique musical world.

“Buses, Boats, Planes, Trains & Taxis” and “On The Dance Floor” are up-tempo dance tracks. “Summer Of Ska” is a free-flowing instrumental. “Everybody’s Got Their Style” combines all of their best elements into one song.

Chet’s Last Call may not change the music world but it does make it more enjoyable and sometimes that is enough.
